The COVID-19 crisis and the ensuing lockdowns have increased the daily amount of waste from plastic food packaging from online food deliveries by 15% (from 5,500 tons/day to 6,300 tons/day). GC is Thailand’s first private company that recognized the concerns over this issue and responded with a proactive solution by joining with partners.

GC is a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and was honored with the “SET Sustainability Awards.” The company initiated Thailand’s “Send Plastic Home” pilot project by partnering with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Thailand Responsible Business Network (TRBN), also various existing and new partners. Together, they aim to effectively retrieve waste from food deliveries and set up Thailand’s first “Circular Hotspot” on Sukhumvit Road. GC will collaborate to build a mechanism that promotes proper waste sorting by establishing drop-off points in partnership with our allies.

Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, Chief Executive Officer of GC, joined a discussion panel during the “Send Plastic Home” project launch press conference organized by the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). Dr. Chaya Chandavasu, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Corporate Branding, also participated on May 18, 2020 at the SEC’s office.

Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, said, “Waste management must start with everyone, by sorting and then cleaning plastic waste before it is discarded to make sure that it is properly recycled at the plant. The plastic waste can be transformed into fibers and several types of resin. Through this transformation process, plastic waste becomes ‘value-added’ and can be produced into a variety of recycled and upcycled products that go back into the hands of end consumers. This waste, if properly sorted, can boost incomes, enhance sanitation, and improve the well-being of those who make a living by collecting waste. Furthermore, it helps attract more people into the high-quality recycling business which can create further positive environmental impacts. GC continue to take pride in being a Total Solutions Provider ready to stand side by side with the public sector and our partners to further implement this project to cover wider areas and drive the country towards an improved and comprehensive circular economy in the future.”
